Maui Botox Cosmetic Treatment

Botox injections near meYou may think that Botox cosmetic treatment is only for celebrities, but soccer moms, your friends, and neighbors could easily be among the millions of people regularly getting this treatment. Have you ever run into a friend and noticed she is looking younger, yet you could not figure out exactly why? She may have gotten Botox! When injected by a highly qualified medical provider, our Maui Botox cosmetic treatment provides a natural look that is undetectable, leaving you with a refreshed, rested appearance.

Botox and the other most commonly used neuromodulators, Xeomin, and Dysport, are the most popular treatments that we provide here at RevitalizeMaui Center for Aesthetics and Longevity Medicine. Treatment with neuromodulators is non-surgical, minimally invasive and it requires no recovery time. This therapeutic, muscle-relaxing treatment is typically recommended for moderate to severe crow’s feet near the eyes and other “expression lines,” including ones in the forehead and glabella. These lines or wrinkles can be a result of things like squinting, laughing, frowning, smoking, and worrying, and they can make you appear older, angry, tired, or stressed.

Will my facial expressions continue to look natural?

Although the results are visible with a smoother surface and refreshed look, Botox cosmetic treatment does not radically change your facial appearance. You are able to show full expression without wrinkles and creases. Our goal is to provide you with a very natural look and make adjustments if needed about two weeks after your initial procedure.

What is Botox Cosmetic Treatment?

Botox is a minimally invasive treatment designed to relax muscles and reduce fine lines and wrinkles on your face. Some wrinkles and lines are caused by overactive muscles. Botox relaxes these muscles, allowing for fewer unwanted expressions. Scientifically, Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are all Botulinum type A injections producing very similar results. FDA approved, Botulinum type A injections are the most common cosmetic procedure in the U.S.

How Long Will the Procedure Take?

The Botox cosmetic treatment typically takes about 15 minutes. Treating multiple areas can take additional time. You can

We use a very tiny needle to inject each unit of Botox® and ice packs for your maximum comfort. Most patients say they feel some stinging and pinching from the Botox cosmetic treatment, but not very much pain at all.

How much does Botox cost?

The cost of Botox cosmetic treatment will depend on the areas treated, the severity of the symptoms and other considerations. Injectors either charge per unit of Botox or by treatment area. Most providers charge between $10 and $20 per unit. Your cost will also depend on the experience level of your Botox provider. Typically a physician will charge more than a nurse.

If Botox is too inexpensive, says Dr. Emeka Okwuje, the director of RevitalizeMaui center for Longevity and Aesthetics, it might be a sign that the original product has been diluted more then it should. If the Botox cosmetic treatment price quoted to you seems too good to be true, it probably is since the cost of the product itself is a large part of the final cost of the treatment.

What is the Usual Botox Recovery Time?

The great thing about the Botox cosmetic treatment is that it truly is a “lunchtime” procedure. You can come in for a quick treatment and head right back out to work. The only restriction is that you will be asked not rub the injected area for 4 hours. Also, avoid aspirin and similar blood-thinning medications to prevent bruising. Do not exercise for at least 24 hours.

What is the difference between Botox, Xeomin and Dysport?

Botox, Xeomin and Dysport have all been scientifically compared, and each has been proven to work as well as the others. Most practitioners agree that one does not work longer or faster than the other. They all take approx 3-14 days to show results and last 3 to 5 months. All three of these neurotoxin products are used to treat the same areas in the face and neck for cosmetic purposes.

Botox – Botox was the first neuromodulator available and it is still the best known. Because it has been around so much longer than Xeomin and Dysport, some people just assume they should get a Botox cosmetic treatment or tend to feel more comfortable using it over the other two options. However, they all provide very similar results when you have a skilled and knowledgeable injector.

Xeomin – Xeomin is a “naked botulinum toxin,” meaning that it does not contain any additives or additional proteins that surround the botulinum toxin protein like with Botox and Dysport. A benefit of a pure-form injectable like this is that the human body is less likely to develop antibodies or become resistant to it, and there is also less chance of an allergic reaction to the product. Xeomin may diffuse slightly differently than when you get Botox due to the lack of proteins, however, it is pretty similar and interchangeable when it comes to the number of units required to achieve the same results as with Botox.

Dysport – Dysport is injected at a different strength than Botox and Xeomin. A 2.5-to-1 ratio of Dysport to Botox or Xeomin is typically needed to achieve similar results. For example, a forehead injected with 20 units of Botox would need the same amount of Xeomin but would need around 50 units of Dysport. Because of this, the price of Dysport is typically about 2.5x’s less per unit than Botox or Xeomin.

Dysport is purified differently than Botox or Xeomin, which causes it to typically diffuse more and affect a larger area. This can lead to a more natural, and less “frozen” look. Also, because it diffuses more you usually need fewer injections, which can be an advantage for people who are scared of needles.

What to expect, and how long does it take?

You should not be nervous to get Botox, Xeomin or Dysport – they are all safe and effective and take approximately fifteen minutes to administer for treatment. Using a fine needle, the neuromodulator of choice is injected into the specific muscle that is contracting and causing the wrinkles to form. The injection simply causes the muscles being treated to relax, and your skin becomes unwrinkled and smooth. The effects of a single Botox cosmetic treatment will last approximately 3-4 months, with additional treatments often lasting longer. Full results are typically visible within four to ten days after treatment.

Types of Botox Treatments:

Upper Face

The use of Botox for cosmetic purposes began with treating expression lines of the upper face, mainly the frown area. Still, the most commonplace for people to first receive Botox injections is between the eyebrows to correct those vertical frown lines. Today, most doctors and patients are most familiar with using Botox to inject the upper face to also treat crow’s feet, or the smile lines on the sides of the eyes, and horizontal lines on the forehead.

One reason that the upper face is a common Botox cosmetic treatment area is that the muscles located there are easy to locate, assess, and inject, which helps to easily minimize the risk of any side effects. Depending on your age and desired appearance, it is common to get Botox every 3-4 months. Some people prefer to receive another treatment as soon as they see movement coming back in the treated areas, while some like to wait longer enjoying a more softened effect.

Mid/Lower Face & Neck

Until more recently it was considered taboo to use Botox for cosmetic reasons in the mid and lower part of the face. This is because the lower facial muscles have more anatomical complexity than the upper facial muscles, which led to uncertainty about the dosage required and a greater risk of unwanted muscles being affected. This could result in uneven facial expressions and also affect things like chewing and speaking.

In the mid area of the face, the use of Botox is limited and very specific. Typically, fillers are used in this area to help fill in lines and wrinkles and return the volume to aging skin. Botox cosmetic treatment is most frequently used here to treat the bunny or Nasalis lines, which are wrinkles on the outer sides of the nose.

When it comes to the lower face, Botox is used not only to reduce lines but also to reduce creases by providing a “lift” in an age-affected area. This technique is now used in the smile creases running from side of the nose to the corner of the mouth, the nasolabial folds, to lessen their appearance, as well as in the corners of the mouth to fix a droopy, angry expression.

Another newer use for Botox in the lower face is for reducing the jowls and creating a smoother jawline. This is sometimes also referred to as the “Nefertiti lift.” Using a Botox cosmetic treatment in the neck is not new, but it was typically done differently in the past using large doses on large areas of the neck, which resulted in an expensive temporary treatment that had added risks of unwanted side effects such as swallowing and speech impairment, and even difficulty holding the head straight. The Nefertiti lift involves a more careful assessment of the musculature of the neck and lower face, which allows for much smaller doses (50 – 70% less) and fewer injections. This makes it a more affordable treatment, providing the same, or even better, results without the risk of side effects. Loose, sagging neck skin can also be improved by injecting Botox further down each vertical platysmal neck muscle band. This causes the looser envelope of skin to sit closer to the neck, providing a neck lift effect.

Non-Cosmetic

While Botox is most known for its cosmetic uses, there are many other treatments that incorporate Botox. Two common uses of Botox outside of cosmetic procedures include treatment for migraines and hyperhidrosis.

treatment for migraines

What is Getting Botox for Migraines Like?

Approximately 12% of people in America suffer from intense migraine pain. It was accidentally discovered that Botox injections could have a positive effect on migraines when people who were getting Botox treatment in their foreheads for cosmetic reasons noticed that their headaches were improved. Since then, Botox for migraines has become the only FDA approved treatment for chronic migraine. It is also the only migraine treatment that actually prevents migraines, unlike other acute treatments that work to treat a headache after it starts.

Getting Botox for migraines consists of multiple injections around the head and neck at approximately 12-week intervals. Depending on the person, these Botox injections can dull future headache symptoms for up to 3 months at a time. The injection process uses a very small needle and takes about 15 minutes to complete. Even though the treatment consists of 31 injections in 7 areas of the head and neck, the Botox is injected into shallow muscles and most people say that they just feel a tiny pinprick.

Is Botox for Migraines Right for Me?

When you experience frequent or reoccurring migraines, they may be referred to as “chronic migraines.” Chronic migraine is different in that it is a chronic condition that can benefit from preventive treatments. Chronic migraine is defined as having 15 or more days per month that you experience a headache lasting 4 hours or more, with at least 8 of those days associated with a migraine.

You need to continue your Botox treatment for a chronic migraine every 12 weeks, or else you may not see the benefits. Most physicians who provide this treatment recommend starting with 2 treatments, 12 weeks apart. You should notice a reduction in your headache days over the course of those 24 weeks, and then from there you and your doctor can decide if it is best for you to continue with the recommended treatment every 12 weeks.

Botox for underarm sweat

Botox for Hyperhidrosis

The official term for excessive sweating out of the underarms, hands, feet, groin, and face is Hyperhidrosis. If you suffer from this condition then you are familiar with issues like ruining your clothes and embarrassment from constant sweating in everyday situations, new situations, when you’re stressed or anxious or when you’re meeting new people.

Botox injections (onabotulinumtoxinA) can be used as a treatment for severe underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis) when topical medications do not work for people 18 years and older. As of now, Botox is not used to treat excessive sweating in other areas of the body because the safety and effectiveness are still unknown.

For Botox underarm hyperhidrosis treatment, an entire 100 unit vial is typically required (50 units in each armpit). You want to make sure that your dosage is enough, because if you use less than the clinical amount then it will not be effective for as long. A topical numbing cream is applied to the armpits before the injections, and most patients report only mild discomfort at worst. The results of this treatment typically last about 6 months.
