The Myers’ Cocktail is named after the late John Myers, M.D., who was a Maryland physician that used IV injections of nutrients to treat many chronic conditions. Conditions that have been found to respond well to this treatment include, but are not limited to, acute asthma attacks, migraines, fatigue, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, acute muscle spasms, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis, seasonal allergies and cardiovascular disease. It is also used for improvements in athletic performance.
For this treatment, a small catheter is inserted into your vein and the infusion is given very slowly over 20-30 minutes. Side effects are remarkably rare, and almost always limited to local irritation of the vein. The most common sensations are heat and flushing (an effect from magnesium), and the taste of vitamins soon after the infusion begins. While treatment plans vary based on each individual’s needs, most people receive the cocktail once or twice a week at the beginning of treatment. After that, your treatments may be spread out to once or twice per month for as long as your doctor feels necessary. Many patients with chronic conditions choose to continue the infusions every 1-4 weeks, or whenever they feel their energy slipping.
Depending on where you get your treatment the ingredients may vary, but the most commonly-used vitamins include:
• Magnesium chloride – prevents inflammation and supports a healthy immune system. Also good for treating asthma, migraines, and high blood pressure
• Calcium gluconate – treats low blood calcium and builds strong bones
• B complex – promotes healthy hair and skin, prevents memory loss and helps with stress
• Vitamin C – fights cancer and acts as an antioxidant
Because the “leaky” nature of the gut, the cocktail is provided via IV to ensure that all vitamins and minerals make it directly into the bloodstream and get necessary nutrients into the cells. This is especially beneficial for individuals with low-performing digestive systems, or who have pain from fibromyalgia. It is also used to treat individuals who suffer from:
• Acute illnesses
• Heart disease
• Menstrual cramps
In addition to its use to treat and prevent medical conditions, it has also become known for its use as a hangover cure in party cities and among celebrities. Some patients feel an energy boost that can last for days, or even weeks. Patients who often get sick or infections may experience an improved immune response, with less susceptibility to viral illnesses.
Overall, the Myers’ cocktail offers three main benefits to anyone who receives it:
• Natural increase in energy levels
• Improved immune system
• Better sleep
